I don’t think you necessarily need to wear a short dress, you just need to get the proportions right for a longer dress. You should try to avoid something with a lot of heavy material, a large print or a poufy A-line skirt - these will all overwhelm your body. Look for a silhouette that will lengthen you, which will be a slimmer fitting dress in either a mermaid style or with an empire waist.
